Working with Drupal 7 Modules

Modules are great way to extend Drupal 7. Here you’ll learn how to install, enable, update, disabling and uninstalling a module. Currently drupal has nearly 25,000 modules as of December 2013. If you want to find any module navigate to https://drupal.org/project/project_module, search for the module based on your criteria.

Installing a module in Drupal 7

Installation of a module in durpal 7, we can do in different ways.

  • We can do it through admin panel.
  • And next method is uploading the module through ftp application like filezilla.
  • Installing module using drush command line installer.

Installing module through drupal administrative panel

  1. Navigate to drupal administration section, and go to modules section.
  2. On drupal Administration page, click on install new module link.
  3. On the next screen you have two options.
    • First option is copy module url location on drupal server and paste it there.
    • Next option is download module archive file to your local computer and upload it.
  4. Click on install button, after that module will be installed on your website.
  5. From modules administration page, you can find newly installed module.

Download theme & upload it to server

  1. Select module that you want to install it on drupal website.
  2. Then download module archive file same as drupal core version.
  3. Extract module archive files.
  4. Upload extracted files to server using any ftp program.
  5. Upload module files to your-drupal-root-directory/sites/all/modules
  6. After that login to drupal administration section.
  7. And navigate to Modules Administration page.
  8. You can find newly installed module.

Enabling a module in Drupal 7

After installing module, for using it we need to enable the module. Enabling module can be done in two ways

  1. Enable module through drupal module administration page
  2. Enable module using drush

Enable module through drupal module administration page

  1. Navigate to drupal modules administration pages Dashboard => Modules.
  2. You can find newly installed module.
  3. Select the check box right before module name.
  4. Click on save configuration button.
  5. After saving the changes module will be activated.

Note: If are not seeing any changes after activating modules, clear all caches or flush caches. If you want to know more about clearing caches in drupal 7 read this.

Updating a module in drupal 7

After installing a module if you find updates in next version, you can update your module to latest version. To know more about updating module in drupal 7 read this.

Disabling a module in drupal 7

  1. Navigate to drupal modules administration pages  Dashboard => Modules.
  2. Find the module that you want to disable.
  3. UnSelect the check box right before module name.
  4. Click on save configuration button.
  5. After saving the changes module will be disabled.

Uninstalling a module in drupal 7

For uninstalling a module, follow these steps

  1. First disable the module
  2. Navigate to drupal module administration page, http://example.com/admin/modules/uninstall
  3. After that select check box right before module name.
  4. Click on uninstall button.
  5. After that selected module will be uninstalled.
